At the time that you arrive on duty, one of your patient’s has family visiting. Then, one of the patient’s family members hands you an envelope that includes a thank you card with a monetary gift as a token of appreciation for caring for their loved one. What should your response be?
You should thank the family as well as your patient but let them know that you have to decline the gift until you are able to check with your supervisor as to what the facility policies are.
It would be considered a violation of professional ethics to accept any kind of gifts from a patient or their family since you are an staff and are being paid to care for your patients. Several facilities let monetary gifts be donated to a fund that lets the facility to buy items, which would advantage all the patients, but every facility has a different policy. You must also be aware of other problems that are associated with accepting gifts from patients with dementia.
